In order to solve an equation there must be an equation... hence, the expression must be "set equal" to something... such as setting the expression to "=14".  The best way to expand (8x-1)(8x-1) is to use the 'Expand' tab... use the 'Solve' tab for an actual equation, as shown in the second image:
