Maybe I just don't understand the symbol between the a and the R. Honestly, it looks like both sides of the equation would end up being zero. And what does R stand for?

Answer provided by our tutors

means that 'a' is element of the set of real numbers 'R'

If u click on 'Options' and select 'show: a lot of steps' and 'Apply' you will indeed see '0 = 0':

This means that any real value of 'a' will satisfy the equation.

In other words, the solution does not depend on 'a'.
