why isnt this figuring the entire problem- it was giving me step by step information, now all it does is use 1 step, and does not get the the final answer

It is because you have selected the 'Solve' tab for solving equations and you have entered an expression.
Select 'Expand', type 2i(4 - i)^2 and click on 'Solve' to get the desired solution.
Make sure that in 'Options' you select 'Calculate using: real(decimal) numbers'
