I'm having a hard time understanding step 2 and 3

I would suggest beginning a simplification with 'a few steps' and then increase the number of solution steps when the additional information is helpful and clarifying. The 'Options' tab is a good tool for controlling the number of solution steps and examining it in a few different perspectives.
Your equation has two variables, hence one is "solved for" and will remain alone on the left side. The first step is incorporating '3' into the parentheses and then those terms are manipulated in order to place 'x' on the left side and 'n' on the right side.
