The fastest way to study a solution is to click on a particular solution step and that will provide the logic which is employed.  Your equation is solving for 'x' using a quadratic equation.  If you want an answer to be reported as a decimal, click on the 'Options' tab and select 'real numbers', otherwise an integer answer is exact (a real decimal will likely be an approximation).
