How come for some questions, we have to subtract the two equations by eachother and sometimes add the two equations together. I really need help. THANKS!!!!

We subtract or add equations in order to eliminate one of the variables.
In this case we do it to eliminate 'x' in the second equation so that next we are able to solve for 'y':
