The simplification begins with a common denominator, hence 'x' becomes '2x/2' (multiplying 'x' by '2/2').  There are always several different ways to review a solution step... for example, click on a particular solution step and review the logic which is employed... also, click on the 'Options' tab and begin a simplification with 'a few steps' and only increase the number of solution steps when additional steps is helpful rather than confusing or overly redundant.
