I don't understand how to determine whether or not there is one solution

You can equate the right sides of the equations at the bottom:
and that will give you a quadratic equation in x - with 2 solution.
From the graph you can also see that the green line will cut through the red at one more point (not visible on the screen). Notice 2 solutions are shown after zooming out:
