I don't understand. Why after we add the 8x to the 12x is there still -8x-1 in the middle? Shouldn't it be just -1 since we've removed the 8x? It seems like no matter what the rules keep changing. Can you please explain. Thanks

We add "8x" and "12x" for the first inequality. The second inequality stays the same.

Try looking the solution as solving two seperate inequalities and finding the intersecion of both solutions.

So, the solution for

12x>= -8x - 1

is

x <=1/20

And the solution for

- 8x - 1 < 24

is

x > -25/8

x > - 3 1/8

The intersection is - 3 1/8 < x <= 1/20

We recommennd solving using the "Graph" tab to get the graphed solution too:
