I don’t understand why I have to square 2 and cube 3. I also don’t understand the following steps after dividing by 6.

You don't have to square 2 and cube 3, it is written in that way as to show the step by step solving since:

108 = (2^2)(*3^3)

You can also just delete both sides of the equation by 6:
