I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS AT ALL. WHY THE 3X + 2 X? HOW DO YOU ARRIVE AT THESE NUMBERS TO START WITH?

Answer provided by our tutors

A common denominator is arrived by multiplying one fraction by '3' and the other by '2'.  Clicking on a particular solution step allows you to quickly review the logic which is applied.  It is also good to begin a solution with 'a few steps" and then increase the number of solution steps when the additional information is helpful (click on the 'Options' tab).
