I followed the steps to the final answer, however I'm confused as to how to substitute x for the answer to get =3.

If you are searching for an answer "x=3" then that would be an incorrect answer. I would always encourage you to use the 'Options' tab and begin a solution with 'a few steps', then include the number of solution steps when the additional information is helpful.
