I understand the problem all the way until it's (1-3)(1+w)/w-1.
I figure the w-1 would cancel out and it would just be -(w+1)

Yes, '(w-1)' cancels out, but also '(-w+1)' can be written as '(-1)(w-1)' or just '-(w-1)':
