I understand why you changed the -5x to a positive and the -7x to a negative buy why did you not change x^4 to a negative?

Answer provided by our tutors

The negative sign is applied to the entire term, hence the exponent is not negated.  A negative exponent indicates a denominator, so the "x^2" is much different than "x^(-2)" because "x^(-2)=1/x^2".
