the multiple choice options for my home work to this problem do not include this solution for y^2=6. None of he multiple choice options include this solution. They are looking for the solution using the principle of square roots.

It is normal in more advanced mathematics classes to avoid the radical symbol and use exponential notation because the rules for working with radicals are exponent-based.

The answers for "y^2=6" include:
"the square root of "square root of 2 times square root of 3" which can be simplified to "square root of 6"

...so the other answer would be "negative square root of 6"

...also, it's typically best to use 'a few steps' and only expand an answer to more solution steps if the additional information is helpful.  By clicking on the 'Options' tab, the answer can be show as a decimal (but I doubt any of the choice options will provided as decimals) and 'a few steps' can be provided:
