what key do I use if I want to say x squared?

I generally will use the '^' (Shift+6) symbol to enter an exponent, as in "x^3" to enter "x cubed" (then use the "right arrow" key or a click of the mouse to exit the exponent region and continue typing). You can also use the 'software key' as shown below:
