The 3.11 is 3*11, 3 multiplied by 11.  I would always encourage that a solution begins with 'a few steps', hence the two images below show the clarification of "3*11" rather than "3.11" and then show a simpler approach to solutions.  As additional solution steps is helpful then simply increase the number of requested steps, otherwise it can lead to some confusion.
