Why can't you just cancel the 4's on the P side and reduce the fraction 54/4 to 27/2? Why all the additional steps, showing the exponents? Is that really necessary?

Sometimes unnecessary steps do show, and this depends on the chose arithemtics (integer or decimal) as well as the number of steps selected.
You can adjust the number of steps via 'Options' tab. In your case, if you select 'Show: a few steps' and 'Apply' you will get a more tidy solution:
