why did we carry 35 over to the other side to make it positive?

I am not sure which 35 you are referring to - there is only one here:

and it has never been carried to the other side.

Generally we don't move numbers of variables to make them positive - we move them so variable containing terms can be isolated on one side and variable-free terms on the other. During that process terms change signs (that can make them positive or negative)
