Why does 0.40y turns into -0.4y?

Answer provided by our tutors

"0.40y" is the same as "0.4y"

We want to eliminate "0.4y" so we multiply both sides of the first equation by "-0.4" and add the first and the second equation:

This way we get equation with one variable "x"

that we solve for "x".

Once we find "x" we plug the value into one of the starting equations to solve for "y".
