Why does it suddenly become negative in the last step?

Answer provided by our tutors

We divide the numerator and the denominator by "a-x".

Since there is "x-a" in the denominator we have:

(x - a)/(a - x) = -(a - x)/(a - x) = -1

and this where the negative comes from.
