Why does the less than sign change to a greater than sign?

Multiplying or dividing the both sides of inequality is changing the sign:
Suppose 'a' and 'b' are both negative with 'a<b'
Switching the signs (multiplying by (-1)) makes the resulting numbers both positive with '−a>−b'
